15 – 21 May 2018
Puglia and its Legacy of Art and Architecture

The southern Italian region of Puglia was conquered by Greeks and Romans, Normans and Swabians all leaving a rich legacy of art and architecture.

The seaport of Trani, famous for its magnificent Romanesque cathedral, will be the base from which to visit Emperor Frederick II’s Castel del Monte, an unique example of military architecture with Northern European, Islamic and classical features, reflecting the taste and aims of the patron.  The Cathedral of medieval Lucera is one of the major Angevin creations in southern Italy.  It will be explored together with Frederick II’s castle and the Roman amphitheatre.

We will then transfer to the southern city of Lecce, famous for its Baroque piazzas, churches (such as the splendid S. Croce) and palaces and its Roman remains. There will be an excursion to ancient Otranto to see the 11th century cathedral with its 12th century mosaic floor and the Aragonese castle.  A day will be dedicated to Ostuni, hilltop whitewashed citadel on the edge of the Murge plateau and to Alberobello, the UNESCO town famous for its cone-shaped stone houses (as on the image).
